Helena Talbot’s blog – Must Have Tools For The First Time Homeowner

Are you a first time homeowner? Congratulations! You are going to love owning your own home. But there are many things you have to learn. We would like to help you with one thing that you will need almost immediately – a homeowners tool kit.

Here are a few things you will need to put together a homeowners toolkit.

• Screwdrivers. You will need a Phillips head and a flathead screwdriver. These are usually enough to complete most jobs
• Hammer. You will need a hammer for just about everything you do
• Nails. It is a good idea to buy a kit that has an assortment of different types of nails. You will need nails of all sorts and sizes and some screws as well
• Tape Measure. A tape measure will be used for many things such as measuring for furniture and hanging pictures just to name a few
• Level. This will come in handy for hanging pictures or installing shelving and much more
• Stud Finder. This is another tool you will need to hang your pictures. It will come in handy for your other home improvement projects as well
• Pliers. You should purchase a pliers set. Most come with an adjustable wrench, slip joint, needle nose, diagonal and grove joint pliers
• Ladder. You may not think so now, but you will need some ladders. If you can afford it, get several different sizes including an extension ladder for jobs like hanging pictures, installing crown moulding, painting, putting things on high shelves, cleaning the gutters, inspecting the roof, etc.
• Cordless Drill. A drill will come in handy for many different projects and the best thing about it is that you don’t have to mess around with extension cords because it’s cordless
• Hose. You will need a garden hose for cleaning, watering and much more
• Extra Light Bulbs. These will come in handy very often. You never know when one of your bulbs will burn out
• Batteries. You should always keep an assortment of batteries on hand
• Flashlight. It would be a good idea for you to keep a flashlight in your toolbox as well as in every room of your house. Remember to change the batteries periodically

Try checking out some garage sales to build up your supply. You can also check to see if your community has a tool sharing program. Otherwise, ask someone at your local home improvement store if they can help you put one together.

I hope you have found this information helpful. If you are thinking about buying or selling a home, call your realtor and ask them for a list of available homes in your area. Your realtor would be more than happy to help you in any way they can.
