Helena Talbot’s blog – How A Dirty Attic Can Harm Your Family And What You Can Do About It

How often do you think about your attic? Probably not very often. Besides, why should you. So if you are not thinking about your attic then it probably does not get cleaned very often either. But did you know that what’s in your attic can actually harm your family without your even knowing it?

We realize that cleaning your attic is not on your list of favorite things to do. But keep reading because we are going to tell you why keeping your attic clean is so very important.

If you are not cleaning your attic, here is what is happening up there:
• It is building up dust , dander and possibly mold
• You could be developing a rodent or insect problem
• There may be very small leaks that you didn’t know you had

If you or anyone in your family has allergies, then these things are a very big problem. All of that dust, those dust mites and that dander are probably getting into your living area through spaces you don’t even realize like: your ceiling hatch, your doors, all of your recessed lighting and through your HVAC system.

Even if no one in your family has allergies, the buildup of insect and rodent droppings could potentially be hazardous to your family’s health. So what should you do?
Here are a few attic cleaning tips to help get you on the right track.
• Clean out all of the clutter
• Throw away anything you know you will never use
• Store all of your keepsakes in sealed containers
• Dust all of the walls, windows, rafters and anything else that needs dusted with a Swiffer or any type of duster that electro statically attracts dust and holds it in place. When you are done you should have dusted everything in your attic
• Then vacuum everything with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter on it. You will need this type of vacuum to remove all of the little microscopic particles that are making a home in your attic
• It is very important that you wear a face mask while cleaning your attic. Some of the invisible airborne particles could make you sick if you don’t
• If you have bad allergies, you should probably hire a professional to do this job
• Inspect your attic for small roof leaks that could let moisture in and create mold growth
• Seal any and all holes in your attic that are not supposed to be there. Sealing all cracks, crevices and any holes will help keep out insects and rodents that could create a hazardous environment
• It would be a good idea to inspect your roof and its shingles from the outside as well. Then make the repairs if necessary

It is extremely important to keep your attic clean and most people don’t realize that. All of those dust particles are made up of dust might dander, roach droppings and other types of dander from dried saliva, urine and feces from insects and rodents that come and go from your attic. So make sure you are cleaning your attic at least once every year.
